16 JUN - Buchenwald (Day 9)
Today was an easy day. No pictures, sorry.
I grabbed some breakfast and then took my laundry to be done. It's been a long time since someone has done my laundry on a regular basis. The price isn't too bad though. They told me it would take 2 hours to my laundry. No problem. I dropped it off at 12PM and I arrived at 3:45 PM to retrieve it. Of course, the laundry store was closed. I shouldn't be amazed when this happens but I always am.
This afternoon we went to Buchenwald. Buchenwald was a large concentration camp that is located about 5 miles outside of Weimar. I wasn't as emotionally moved by this concentration camp as I was with Dachau (near Munich) in high school. The size of the camp was incredible though. The fence surrounding the camp is 3KM (~1.5 miles) long. Over 20,000 people died at this camp. It wasn't a extermination camp but the Jews and all kinds of other prisoners were used in forced labor. We rented a video walking tour on a Dell PDA and spent 3 hours touring the grounds. It's impossible for me to get my mind around the hatred that is required to treat other humans in that way. Enough about that.
The rest of the day was spent reading a book and watching matches on the TV. I did cook my first dinner here tonight. I must have used about 20 matches trying to get the gas stove going. I think I've got the trick now. If I don't have any eye brows when I return, you'll know why. Oh, and we need more matches.
Tomorrow starts our whirlwind tour of Germany and I am not kidding. Seven days, seven games and seven different cities. I think we are in Kaiserslautern twice but on a opposite ends of the week. I hope my underwear supply holds out. It's definitely going to be fun. I'll try to keep the blog posted too but there may be a night or two when we don't have Internet access.
