Day 8
The "day of torture" as I like to call it! Unfortunately, Ricardo has already detailed today's events at the Medieval Torture Museum. This was some pretty crazy stuff that they had there. I take the pictures, and he reports about them...not quite fair because I was a bit slow posting today.
Anyway, here is today's travel log:

We drove from Weimar, our home base, to Rothenburg ob der Tauber, which is located near the "Romantic Road". No, it's not romantic as in sappy/lovey-dovey, but it was the main thoroughfair of the Romans. This is where most of the picturesque castles are located, including Schloss Neuschwanstein (sp?), which is what Disney copied for it's famous castle. So, Rothenburg is just a bit off from the road of castles.
It was quite a contrasting day. We got to Rothenburg in the early afternoon, and were trekking towards (hey Dr. D, I said towards!) the central part of the "altstadt" or old town. Then entire town of Rothenburg is surrounded by the original walls that were built for protection, and cars are generally not allowed withing the walls, but the ones that are in town are (I think) residents of the town. As a result, all of the tourists take over the streets, which are still cobblestone and pretty rough. It was funny to see people riding their bikes through town, because I sure hope they had both spring-loaded seats as well as shock absorbers on their wheels. It had to be the bumpiest ride I could ever imagine, but people were doing it anyway. Here was one of my favorite pictures of the day:

No, I don't like it because it shows off Ricardo's off-center mohawk, but the girl being dragged behind dad on the improvised bicycle built for two. My only question was what would happen if dad decides to brake while Gretel decides to speed up? I think it would make for a comical scene! Or, even better, what if dad is going uphill, and Gretel decides to pedal BACKWARDS?! Oh, poor dad...trying to spend quality time with the kids, and this is what he is stuck with.
On the matter of names, I thought this was pretty interesting:

Ya know when they have all the American name keychains and such...this is the German equivalent. Somewhat of a German "name book" where you can pick out your child's name. These are typical German names.
Well, off to bed since it's almost 2AM again. Tomorrow, I think we're heading to a former concentration camp that is located near here, so it might be somewhat of a depressing day tomorrow, but to me it's all about perspective - just don't repeat history that was bad.
Cheers,
Rocco
