Day 5
Travel log:

Day 5 - we stayed in Dusseldorf last night, and so we travelled about 30 minutes north to Gelsenkirchen and back tonight after the match. Gelsenkirchen is not on the map because it is a relatively small town whose only "tourist attraction" is a slag heap! Yeah, that's right, you know you won't make it onto a map when the only point of interest in your entire town is a heaping pile of shite!
Today was BAD...we lost to the Czechs something like 9-0, or at least that's how it felt. It was extremely hot today, and we rode the free train from downtown to the stadium; bad idea. The gate we were supposed to go into was 360-degrees around the stadium from where we got off the train. That's right, all the way around...you may ask why we didn't just go right to the gate when getting off the train...well, there was a fence. The gate was about 10 meters away, but a nice fence forced the entire US supporters section to walk around the entire stadium. Not only that, but upon exiting the stadium, the nearest train station was the second in line back into town, which meant that all the Czechs got on at the first stop so the trains and buses were completely packed by the time they got to us. Complain...yeah, but I'm just cranky after the loss (and my ankle is still killing me 2 weeks after injuring it...oh well, I've got another I guess).
The only bright spot in my day was that I got to get a picture with one of my all-time favorite US soccer players...Frankie Hejduk:

This guy is a fitness freak (yeah, the one on the left, that is). He is the most fit athlete on the US team...and he's a California surfer dude! He runs up and down the sidelines for the entire 90 minutes. Unfortunately, he got injured recently, so he wasn't able to be on the US team. That's too bad, because we really could've used someone who wanted to actually play today. Well, off to finish the only project I brought on my vacation so that I guess I'll officially be on "vacation" after that.
Cheers,
Rocco

You two must really feel like you fit in over there, by the end will you be standing in the middle of the sidewalks doing street acts for money with those crazy hair do's? That Bo and Luke would pose in a picture with you two at the opening ceremony game, they say they felt like they were in between two football players! ha!ha!Rico using the map I gave him?
Haven't had to use the map. We got lucky and the SUV has GPS. It's awesome. I still miss turns and Rocco rolls his eyes but we eventually make it. We met a family from New Jersey in our hotel in Dusseldorf. They were checking in at the same time as us. They had been trying to find the hotel for 2 hours and Rocco and I drove right to it.
