Day 6

Today, we woke up, ate breakfast at the hotel, and drove back to our apartment in Weimar. Here's today's travel log:

Today was pretty much uneventful, but that's because I was pretty tired. I'm still not used to sleeping on the hard beds compared to my brand new bed at home...so nights have been pretty restless and not alot of sleep. Oh well. We came home and I took a nap this afternoon.

Since it was a pretty uneventful day, I don't have alot to report. We did eat lunch/dinner at a "typical" restaurant of the region. They served the local specialty: kloessen. As it turns out, it was the same thing that we had at dinner the other night with the Wellas - potatoes that are taken apart, mixed with something else, then made into a round dumpling-type thing. They weren't as good today as they were the other night. But, the meal was still exceptionally good! Good eats here!

The one thing that I've found pretty interesting is how late in the night it remains light. Right now, it's after 10PM, and it's still light enough to go outside without the need for street lights. Here's a photo out the rear window of the apartment at 9PM:

I think tomorrow, we're going to be doing some sightseeing in the immediate area, so hopefully I'll have some pics to share tomorrow. It has been very hot here the last couple of days, but it's supposed to cool down quite a bit tomorrow, and for me, that's some very welcome news as I don't do extreme cold or hot very well...maybe that's why I'm such a fan of San Diego because that city doesn't really get either of them!

One other thing...about last night, we got back somewhat late into Dusseldorf and decided to get some dinner. However, I wanted a place that had a TV to watch the Italy-Ghana match to root against Italy so the US team might have a better chance to advance to the next round. The only place we could find in the area where we parked was a Chinese restaurant. As my boo can testify, I'm not a fan of any sort of oriental food, and I generally pick the General (insert an Asian general's name here)'s chicken. I open the menu to realize that the Chinese restaurant menu is in German. Not only do I not read Chinese, Mandarin, or any other foreign language that does not have the alphabet that I'm used to, trying to read the names of the food written in German was even worse! After several minutes of staring blankly at the menu, Rico decided to let me in on the "hint"...under the German name of the dishes was the description in English. Not that it helped much since I still don't like Chinese food, but at least I could avoid the "pork knuckles" that seem to be pretty popular in the area where we are staying. In addition to that, there were some Asian patrons at the table next to us that were also watching the game on the TV. One of them had noticed that Rico had painted his head around the mohawk and realized that maybe we had gone to a game earlier in the day, so this guy proceeded to ask us about it. I sometimes have a problem understanding Germans when they speak German to me because I'm not so familiar with the language, but hearing an Asian person speak German to me was even worse! Wow, I was confused and only caught about 1-2 words during the entire conversation.

Cheers,
Rocco
