17 JUN - A Long Drive (Day 10)

I apologize that it has been so long since I posted. It really has been a whirlwind of a tour. None of the hotels where we have been staying have had wireless Internet or even cabled Internet access in the rooms. I'll write in an immediate time reference about how the last week has gone.

Today, we drove from Weimar to Kaiserslautern. It was about a 4 hour drive. We were supposed to trade tickets with someone but they never contacted us. We had also made plans to meet a group called "Yanks Abroad" at a brewery. Once we arrived though, it didn't make sense to pay $20 for "all you can drink and watch the match" since we weren't going to drink that much. We sat in the small restaurant at the same pub though and had some lunch and watched the match.

The streets were PACKED with US fans. Let me tell you though, Americans can come up with some really crazy costumes when they feel like it. I thought that the David Hasselhof Fan Club was brilliant.

There were two Elvii walking around. They're costumes were pretty good. I didn't know that The King was a football fan but it's a comfort to know that now. Besides the fact that The King likes football, he ALSO likes David Hasselhohf. Shocker? You may not be able to see it in the picture below but the Elvii are wearing Hasselhof t-shirts.

I think this photo is self-explanatory.

We are staying at a Best Western just off the highway tonight. There are a lot of Americans here. it's unforctunate that so many Americans expect hotels in Europe to be like hotels at home. It just isn't like that. It's not that the people who work at European hotels don't work hard but there is a different culture here around customer service. I saw several Americans being overly demanding of the wait staff. I was somewhat embarassed to be an American.

The tie with Italy was obviously disappointing but, in the meantime, we are onto another match!
