04 JUL - Knight Takes Castle (Day 27)

I've noticed a fashion trend here for pregnant ladies. It seems that if you are expecting that youare supposed to wear a belly shirt. Expecting is obviously not something to be ashamed of but I don't think it would look quite as good if I left my Buddha belly exposed to nature.

I just wanted to let you guys know that I was a little sad not to be able to celebrate Independence Day at home. I hope you guys all had a good time.

Today, we continued our tourist trip through southern Germany. On a recommendation, we went to Castle Herrnchiemsee south of Munich. I have been to Neuschwanstein after which Walt Disney modelled the Disney castle. I have to say that I was more impressed with this castle. They were both built by the same crazy King Ludwig II. In fact, he emptied the royal coffers building these castles. We weren't allowed to take pictures inside the castle so we have some shots from the outside.

The really cool thing about this castle is that it is on an island in the middle of this large lake. That is totally cool in my opinion.

Here is the castle as we came out of the woods.

The gardens themselves were HUGE and there were huge fountains too.

As I looked away from the castle over the front gardens, a wide path in the woods had been cleared all the way to the lake. I think there were supposed to be huge ponds that on the hill down to the lake so that it would look like the lake came all the way to the castle. Very impressive.

I think you can get a feel for the size of this place in this picture.

I bought a tour book of the inside of the castle. Only 20 rooms of 70 were completed but the ones that were completed were magnificent. The royal bath was a small swimming pool.

As we were making our back to the mainland, we saw this lake weed harvester. I asked Rocco to grab a shot since I used to help my aunt run her weed harvester.

We did a lot of walking on this tour and I was HOT. It was in the 90s and had to be over 80% humidity. I thought that I was going to melt. Me and the dogs were glad to get back on the boat.

Once we got back to the mainland, Tah Dah was craving some non-German food as she said so we went to one of my favorite Scottish fast-food restaurants, McDonald's. Our thirst and hunger slaked, we travelled onto Munich.

We found our apartment and checked in. Lucky for us, a very large Paulaner beer garden was about two blocks down the street. Tonight was a big night, Germany was playing Italy in the semi-finals. One more win and they were in the finals.

Zaccheus and I went down to the beer garden around 19:00. Rocco and Tah Dah were going to meet us there at 20:00. It was incredible. When we got to the beer garden, it was already packed. We got very lucky to find a table with 4 empty seats. Zaccheus volunteered to get beers and some food. It took 30 minutes. The line for the food was VERY long. I felt bad but I had to turn-away a LOT of people looking for a place to sit so they could watch the game. Finally, around 20:30, Rocco and Tah Dah joined us. We weren't sure that they were coming and Zaccheus and I were about to give away their seats.

There must have been 10,000 people at the brewery. I could just imagine how much beer they sold that night.

Unfortunately, Germany lost 0 - 2 to Italy. If Germany had won, that would have been one AWESOME party.

Once the game was over, Zaccheus had not finished her last beer and she was dead set on drinking it. I was ready to go back to the hotel so I employed a technique that works really well on 4 and 5 year olds as well. I bet her that she couldn't finish her half a liter of beer in less than 2 minutes. Sure enough, she did so we went back to the hotel.

Funny story about the hotel. Zaccheus and I were going to share a room and Rocco and Tah Dah were going to share a room. I asked Rocco if we could switch because Zaccheus and I only had a full sized bed. That isn't really enough room for 2 full sized people. The bed situation worked out well for everyone but the shower didn't. The hotel had tucked Rocco's shower head right into the corner between the slanted roof and the wall of the shower. I'm not quite sure how he got clean.
